We are a Brooklyn-based law firm that fights for victims of online harassment, sexual assault, and blackmail. Our pro-bono work is reserved mostly for fighting for good laws and our underage victims of sexual assault, like this client.
She was 13-years-old when she was raped by a classmate. The boy recorded it and the videos were spread around their public Brooklyn middle school. Instead of providing protection and directing her family to resources for her recovery, administrators told our client to stay home from school because her presence and the videos were a distraction to the other students.
Her case is currently under federal Title IX investigation against the NYC Department of Education. Our firm argues that her illogical and, frankly, bullshit punishment demonstrates NYC's public school's cruel habit of retaliating against girls of color after they report being sexually assaulted by a peer.
In the beginning she came to our firm emotionally frayed. She'd stopped eating and drinking. Her mother, who is a part-time home health aide and limited in her English, didn't fully comprehend how wrong the school was for punishing her daughter for being the victim of sexual violence. Several years later, she still carries a lot of pain with her, and it’s very clear how that horrible experience in 9th grade continues to impact her grades and attendance and social interactions. But lately she's begun to express a deep enthusiasm for going to college. With the encouragement of her guidance counselor, she is applying to take community college classes to prepare her for a 4-year-university.
We've set up this GoFundMe to offset some of the costs so she can take that next step. The classes are free, but your help will go towards her:
