My friend and coworker Jen Hollywood's mother, Gina Hollywood, put her house in Florida on the market in March 2013 after finding out Jen was pregnant. A week later, Gina suffered a debilitating stroke. Jen and her brother Matt flew out to Florida immediately, and helped their mother into a rehab facility.
Gina transitioned back to her home with Matt moving in to help out, along with full time nursing care, until Jen and Matt had to sell the house to cover medical expenses.
Gina has since been cared for in a residential skilled nursing facility in Florida while Jen and Matt have worked on figuring out insurance eligibility and transfer requirements, and finding a facility in California with availability for her care.
Jen and Matt's father, Mike Hollywood and his wife Anne, have also provided amazing support throughout this period, even flying Jen's family out to Florida to visit with their mother/grandmother earlier this year.
After two years of navigating the maze of MediCal, Social Security, Disability, and other insurance coverage-related eligibility, and trying to find a spot at a local care facility in Santa Barbara, it looks like there are only a few more hurdles to get through to finally bring Gina home to California!
In the meantime, medical costs have consumed most of the proceeds from the sale of Gina's home, and could run out before she will qualify for Medi-Cal once she has moved back to California. Jen has contacted a medical transportation company, and the cost for a 51-hour cross-country transport in a small RV with two drivers, a nurse, and all gas, food, and care expenses from Melbourne, Florida to Santa Barbara, California is $14, 852. Getting help to cover the costs of Gina's move would be a huge relief to Jen, Matt, and their family.
