Help bring Freya (Allegra) the Mustang back home

Hello, my name is Emily and 6 years ago I had a dream of getting an untouched Mustang through the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM). I wanted to do this to create a unique and special bond and ultimately train them to become a riding partner. On March 20th, 2023 my dream began to come to a reality as I won the 5-year-old Sand Wash Basin Mustang mare known as 'Allegra' through the BLM Internet auction (IA).

The Sand Wash Basin (SWB) Mustangs are "located in the northwest corner of Colorado on public BLM land about 48 miles west of Craig, Colorado (www.sandwashbasin.com)." They are a highly photographed and documented herd. Allegra was named by one of the frequent photographers who saw her very soon after her dam 'Honey' gave birth to her in August 2019. Allegra was rounded up by the BLM in September 2021 along with her dam, colt, and many other horses within the SWB herd. Anxiously waiting to bring Allegra home, I searched the Facebook groups and the internet to find all the wild photos I could of Allegra and her family. Allegra had one colt named Kotori who was already adopted by a lovely family in Colorado in the fall of 2022. Allegra's dam Honey was also available for adoption through the BLM IA and was adopted by the 'Banditas Wild Horse Promise.'

On May 12th, 2023, I drove to Michigan to pick Allegra up at a sanctioned adoption event and brought her through the US to Canada border home in Ontario! While part of me wanted to keep her chosen name, Allegra, I felt that she also needed a new name along with her new beginning so I renamed her Freya!

Since she arrived at my barn her left hip and stifle area looked abnormal and worrisome for me. My main goal quickly transitioned to getting her used to me touching her all over to be able to properly assess this area. Freya was, and is still very guarded due to perceived pain and would mostly only let me work on her body. However, I had a vet, osteopath, craniosacral therapist, and chiropractor come out to help me assess her hip.

I have put a lot of money and many hours into getting her hips investigated short of taking her to the Ontario Vet College for a full pelvic x-ray. I have talked to many of my very experienced horse/mustang friends and professionals. Sadly, it appears that she must have sustained a very major injury early in her life while wild, or while in holding. Due to the length of time it has been like this, it has healed and the muscles have compensated for it. Unfortunately, because of this, the hip is unable to be physically manipulated back or 'fixed'

Because of this, Freya should not be ridden, or used as a working horse. This has been absolutely devastating for me since for 6 years it has been a life goal of mine to have this happen and continue the training journey to have a riding partner. Freya is only 5 years old and has a lot of life ahead of her. After considering many future options for her and talking with many people, I was able to get her approved to go to The Wild Horse Refuge in Colorado. This sanctuary is beside the Sand Wash Basin where she came from! However, to make this possible the cost of safe transport, international vet paperwork, Coggins test, border vet appointment etc., will cost around $2200 USD. I have spent a lot of money, time, and heartache in the short 3 months of owning her. I am trying to do my best by her and I do not have the funds to be able to make this happen.

Therefore, I am asking you to please donate and help me get her to the refuge and live out the rest of her days on more than 22,500 acres of land where the horses roam freely.

Thank you!
