My name is Bree Alter, owner of The Altered Dog. I have been grooming and training dogs in Kingman for almost a decade. I specialize in fearful dogs and training neuro/psyche service dogs. I opened my business at age 22, and have received an Andy Devine Award for Young Entrepreneurs. I opened my business to accommodate a mysterious health condition that was progressing. It was difficult to hold a job with my limitations, but I was able to accommodate myself while doing what I love.

My symptoms have gotten worse over the last few years, and Mayo Clinic finally gave me an answer after two decades of misdiagnoses. I have a condition called "Functional Neurological Disorder". In short, I have a reversible brain injury that causes a large range of symptoms such as tremors, speech issues, chronic pain and fatigue, seizures, blindness, paralysis, and more. These symptoms amplify with stress.

I can recover from it - if I make some changes. And if I don't make these changes, I will only get worse. These changes involve expensive specialists and treatments, as well as lifestyle changes. I need to reduce my load because I do not have the time or energy for recovery. On top of running my business, a lot is going on in the background. A parent is in hospice, and the other is sick. My cousin was murdered. I am driving to Scottsdale multiple times a month to deal with my health.

As my neurological condition is amplified by stress, what I need right now is a break. We are taking a hiatus, while I put my dream shop together, and focus on my health.
