Utah Healthcare Institute is a nonprofit organization in Salt Lake City, Utah, with the sole mission of training doctors. Our doctors participate in global health initiatives which serve people from all over the world:
1- Humanitarian trips. Once a year we take a team of doctors, nurses, and volunteers to an area of acute need. We responded to Haiti after the earthquake. We've been to the Dominican Republic. We helped Katrina hurricane victims. We helped Thailand tsunami survivors. In 2016, Dr. Richard Allen is taking four doctors to Campo Grande, Brazil, to serve in a clinic sponsored by Pioneer Missions. We are raising money for medical supplies and pharmaceuticals for this underserved clinic.
2- Refugee medical care. Our clinic in Salt Lake City, Utah helps thousands of refugees from places like Sudan, Iraq, Nepal, Myanmar, Ethiopia, and others. Medicaid helps with some medical costs, but we need help with translators, medications, transportation, housing, clothing, and even food. We don't just write prescriptions and move on, but provide continuity care and follow up to assist refugees succeed in their new host country.
3- Global health training. Our doctors are well-educated, committed, compassionate physicians. But they need additional experience in cultural issues, public health, community medicine, etc. We need funding for this additional training, and know that it will in turn benefit thousands of patients in the future. In 2016, our group will be attending the WONCA global health conference in Rio DeJaneiro, Brazil.
100% of donation money is used for these causes. Our doctor volunteers use their vacation time for trips and training, and no money goes directly to them. Our clinic overhead and salaries are paid by other sources.
