His friends know him as Rico. His friends’ kids call him Uncle Rico. To some he’s just the big goofy guy with a bigger heart and a tremendous love for tacos. Regardless of how you know him, you certainly know he's among the most loving guys you will ever encounter, a guy who will treat and accept anyone he meets like family from the first handshake or hug. Now more than ever, Rico needs the love and support of his friends and family. After nearly four months of battling pain and discomfort without medical explanation, on October 18, 2017, Rico was diagnosed with stage 3 prostate cancer, which has also had some damaging effects on his colon. His doctors are attacking the cancer as aggressively as possible. He was admitted to St. Luke's on Oct. 20 for surgery, discharged on Oct. 25 after a successful procedure, and will undertake his first round of hormone and radiation therapy on Friday, October 27. He has been fitted with an ostomy bag to use for the duration of his treatment, in part to allow his colon to heal from the months of damage it has already endured. His providers have not yet established the timeframe for his therapy, but the medical costs and time out of work have already begun to grow substantially. Donations will go toward his medical bills, prescriptions, and household expenses during his periods away from work.  For those of us who know him well, we know that he will always give of himself in any way that he can. Please help us refocus all of that shared love and positive energy back to him so he’s able to battle this cancer.
