My Women Hands Pilgrimage is an eight month journey to Thailand, India, Bali, Nepal, Kenya, and more! I'll be visiting with and sharing songs with women and girls involved in grassroots projects devoted to economic empowerment and personal healing from abuse and trafficking. I'll also be singing with children in orphanages and schools.
Imagine how our lives would prosper
If a mother’s eyes saw hunger all around
And her hands held the power to sign the order
To bring wealth to where ever need was found
My trip is funded by a generous fellowship from Wellesley College, my alma mater. But, through this campaign you can donate funds that will go directly to individual women who are on the brink of breaking out of economic/ personal oppression, and to grassroots organizations serving women and children. Through you, my hands can extend further, offering concrete support, adding more flesh and bone to the already powerful vehicle of connection and empowerment– song.
These hands have woven many colors
Held the plow chopped the sugar cane
Signed petitions held the gavel
Knitted up what’s come unraveled
Lifted up the crying child and eased the pain
I know how my heart, my hands have longed to reach out and directly touch and support and bear witness to people whose struggles and even disasters come to us through the media. It is painful to be connected globally, yet far from the intimacy of “being with”. I feel incredibly blessed to have this opportunity to meet more of my global family, learn from them, and bring a wealth of songs and financial support to wherever the need is found.
I’ll be blogging and keeping you up to date as I go. You will be part of this journey- you will make a difference!
