Beczak's mission is to educate people about the ecology, culture, and history of the Hudson River, Saw Mill River and the Bronx River through interactive educational experiences. We do this so that everyone we reach can become better stewards of their rivers and better citizens of their community.
We have many exciting goals for our environmental program over the next year and would love your input and assistance. These include:
- Install an environmently friendly water heater in our building.
- Continue the clean-up efforts as we track and monitor the amount of waste along the shoreline.
- Remove invasive plant species and replace with more native plants and wild flowers, such as milkweed, and make the park a part of the pollinator pathway for monarch butterflies.
- Plant a victory garden for the Community to provide education for neighbors interested in growing food.
- Expand programming, such as winter field trips along the Croton Aqueduct and Tibbetts Brook Park, as well as educational programs, such as those about wetlands and the Indigenous People who inhabited this land, and the lives of enslaved Africans in the Hudson Valley.
Offer composting workshops for the neighborhood and establish a food waste drop-off station.
- Over the long-term, establish our building as a Passive House. A Passive House makes use of the “passive” influences in a building like sunshine, shading, and ventilation – rather than active heating and cooling systems such as air conditioning and central heating. Coupled with very high levels of insulation and airtightness, this makes it possible for a passive building to use 90 percent less energy than a typical dwelling. This project would serve as a signature environmental demonstration center.
Your donation will help make this environmental program a reality. Our beautiful park is one of the last places in this area where the community can actually touch and see the river up close. We value your past support and respectfully ask you to consider a donation.
