Handicap Modifications for Barbara’s Car
I have not known Barbara long, but have been moved by her positive outlook and sheer determination. A native of Uganda, Barbara is a 4’8” woman with disabled legs as a result of polio. Barbara moved from East Africa to Orlando, Florida three years ago. In Uganda she helped train and educate other disabled women to make arts and crafts to sell to support their family. Since moving to Florida she has gained employment in a call center, where her kindness and gentle problem solving skills are a real asset. However, getting around Orlando, with her limited mobility, has become a big challenge for Barbara.
The goal: Hand pedal modification. Barbara needs a modification to the Toyota Corrola she is purchasing to replace any function that requires use of Barbara’s disabled legs.
On a very low income, Barbara has saved $5000 towards her goal of buying a car and has qualified for a $10,000 auto loan. Her dream of independence is getting closer. But Barbara lacks the $5000 cost to pay for the handicap modifications and special needs driving lessons. Can you help Barbara realize her dream?
Barbara currently rides the Orlando city bus four hours a day (to and from work), counting 60 stops between her apartment and work each way. When she gets off the bus, she has to walk a distance from the bus stop using crutches since her legs do not ambulate. In Central Florida frequent and severe thunderstorms are a common hazard and Barbara is exhausted from the walk.
Assist Barbara in realizing her dream of becoming an independent driver. Donate today. For every donation, Barbara will send you a personal thank you, a token of art jewelry or keychain she learned to make as a child in Uganda.
