Baltimore Star Project

The Baltimore Star Project is an organization dedicated to redistributing social capital to the youth of Baltimore City. Many students in Baltimore City leave high school unprepared for life after they graduate. Many who go to college are alarmingly behind their peers and often fail to finish. One of many things prompting the “First Quarter Challenge”, a dismal statistic that illustrates the challenge first-generation college students face while attempting to earn bachelor degrees, is the lack of support. Non-first-generation students earn bachelor degrees at a rate of 68% within six years while less than 25% of first-generation students earn them.

The Baltimore Star Project’s objective is to establish a strong network through case management on a student by student basis, while simultaneously building connections between Star Students and community. Students will learn the importance of community while engaging in experiences outside and within their home city. This year-round program will focus on college preparation and job training. An added element will include community service and mentorship. The Baltimore Star project will partner with a Baltimore City high school and other nonprofits to build a strong network of support before, during, and after college.

Our goal for this fundraiser is to raise enough for at least a third of our budget to cover operational cost and support our initiative to introduce kids from Baltimore to experiences from outside of Baltimore. This organization is lead by Shahem Mclaurin, a Baltimore City youth, who became the first of his family to earn a bachelors degree. His aim is to redistribute social capital and assure that other youth from Baltimore's underserved communities have the same opportunity.
