The goal of this campaign is to raise money for a cause that we believe in. When we came up with the idea that we wanted to do something beautiful and impactful for our society, we recognized that Happy Hippie Foundation was doing just that. This is a Non-Profit organization founded and run by Miley Cyrus. Not only do they recognize the injustice and struggle that homeless youth and LGBTQ youth face on a daily basis but they are doing something effective to fix the issue. We think it is important that these children and young adults are given more than just a bed to sleep on. We want to see the youth be given the proper skills to re-enter back into society ; whether that be at school, work or volunteering. We believe this foundation will provide all necessary resources to the community for these goals to be achieved.
"Our mission is to rally young people to fight injustice facing homeless youth, LGBTQ youth and other vulnerable populations." -Happy Hippie Foundation
Here are some of the basic statistics focused around this issue:
-According to a 2012 study conducted by the Williams Institute at UCLA Law, about 1.6 million youths experience homelessness each year and it is estimated that about 7% of youth in the United States are LGBTQ, while 40% of youth experiencing homelessness identify as Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, Bisexual or Questioning (LGBTQ)
-According to a recent study from Chapin Hall at the University of Chicago, LGBTQ young people are 120% more likely to experience homelessness than non-LGBTQ youth.
-46% of runaway and homeless youth reported being physically abused, 38% reported being emotionally abused, and 17% reported being forced into unwanted sexual activity by a family or household member
-Youth, age 12 to 17, are more at risk of homelessness than adults.
-Studies estimate that the number of pregnant homeless girls are between 6% to 22%.
-75% percent of homeless or runaway youth have dropped out or will drop out of school.
We chose this organization because they really do so much to confront this issue head on. Happy Hippie often aims to provide immediate relief in the wake of emergencies or tragedies by teaming up with other organizations with similar goals. Not only does this foundation have multiple resources for the youth but they also work with so many other amazing organizations that are constantly addressing the issue of homeless youth across the country.
This is a community issue that can only be solved if we all agree to participate in change together. We hope you can help support us with this campaign!
100% of the proceeds will go directly to Happy Hippie Foundation.
