BULA RUN FIJI 2025: One Step Closer to a Fiji Free of HIV/Aids
Join me as I plan to run and raise awareness to stop the rapid rise of drug related HIV/Aids cases in Fiji. I will be completing a 7 day run around Viti Levu, the largest island of Fiji!
Little bit about myself, marathon runner, set builder, Scottish-Australian, I have been travelling to Fiji since 2023. Making life long friends and exploring the beautiful country are just a few of the highlights of my time in the South Pacific, but now it's time to give back.
Fiji is struggling to deter the rising presence of drugs within the country. As a result, for the first time in years, the reported cases of HIV and AIDs have skyrocketed.
The virus was thought to be under control but more than one-thousand HIV cases were detected last year, three times the number in 2023.
Doctors and health workers say the use of needles to inject methamphetamines is driving the increase.
Dr Michelle O'Connor of the Australasian Society for HIV, Viral Hepatitis and Sexual Health Medicine, says an alarming trend among Fiji's meth users is the practice of "bluetoothing".
"That's where somebody injects methamphetamines and then somebody takes their blood and injects it into themself as a way of sharing the drug, to make it go further," said Dr O'Connor.
I have one goal, shine a light on the crisis to encourage help from across the world and help slow this once rare cause of death from taking any more of the Fijian 'bula' spirt.
This will be the route and distances I will be running per day,
