Zion & Ayinde to Ghana 2019

Donation protected
Zion and Ayinde have the rare opportunity to travel with The Adinkra Group for the Back2Africa Festival in Ghana, West Africa from February 25 – March 8, 2019, as performers with Farafina Kan: The Sound of Africa. We still have $1,500 to raise in order to reach our goal. The deadline is February 11.

Organized through a partnership between The Adinkra Group and The Ghana Tourism Authority, the Back2Africa Festival celebrates Black History Month in the last week of February through Ghanaian Independence Day in the first week of March. This annual cultural and educational event focuses on the arts, education and service, and connects African American and Ghanaian cultural art forms through live performances and educational service projects. The Festival also helps to provide school supplies and resources for Ghanaian school children in the Akuapem Region. Back2Africa is also an official event of the Year of Return, Ghana 2019. This year’s Back2Africa Festival includes service projects and performance stops in Kumasi, Cape Coast, and Accra featuring Black Alley, CrossRhodes, and the youth performers of Farafina Kan.

Ghana housed approximately 75% of the dungeons built on the West Coast of Africa and 2019 presents an opportunity for the global African family to embark on a personal and collective Birthright journey to embrace the experience of traveling full circle back to their homeland. For children of African descent, a trip to West Africa can also be the beginning of deepening their identity and connection with the source of their ancestry. Not only will Zion and Ayinde have an opportunity to take in the sights, sounds, and tastes of Ghana, they will also be able to share their experiences with the community through presentations, reports or special projects reflective of the unique experiences this 10-day excursion.

The educational benefits are invaluable. We all know that educational travel changes lives and is particularly beneficial for school-aged children. Studies show that students who travel, 92% say that it has a lasting impact on their worldview, and more than half say it was the most important experience of their lives.

In addition, as youth performers for Farafina Kan, Zion and Ayinde will perform as a part of Ghana's Independence Day Celebration, at the Cape Coast Castle in Ghana, that was once deemed as “the door of no return," and the Ghana National Theater.

Your donation supports airfare from DC to Ghana, hotel, meals, transportation within Ghana, and other costs associated with touring the country during the 10- day trip.
