Hello, my name is Ms Mumford, I am a high school STEM teacher, specializing in biotechnology. Unfortunately I have OA, which lead to both of my thumbs' ligaments completely blowing out in both of my hands. I have had to undergo reconstructive hand surgery with the removal of the CMC joint and ligament reconstructive surgery in both hands, first surgey in August & second in Nov only to require a 3rd surgery in Feb. Heal time is long at 14 weeks to one year. While I am on the path to recovery and can't wait to get back to my students, I am struggling to make ends meet. When you run out of sick days in my school district, your pay is docked at your daily rate, $360/day. This takes the majority of my monthly income as teachers are only payed for 15 days a month so the district can pay teacher year around. I'm paying another person to work full-time in my place, paying insurance and taxes, i was informed that it is possible to actually recieve negative amount on my check. I only received $229 on my Oct check. Payroll called to inform me I will not receive a paycheck in Nov. Now as opay is a month delayed from when you work, I will not receive much if anything for March, as i have been of eork since Feb 7th from my 3rd hand surgery. This is not a sustainable situation for me as a single parent and teacher. I am seeking assistance for covering the expenses of longterm medical leave.
