Why I’m Turning North.
A Portrait of America in 2026
I’ve been in Mexico almost a year. Now I’m turning back north. I could keep going south—the easy road—but something inside me is pulling me back across the border. March 2026, I cross the CBX bridge into San Diego and start heading East.
I’m not going back to the America I remember. The country I left isn’t the one I’m returning to. Somewhere along the way, it’s changed. Lost its way. Different. I don’t know exactly what I’ll find, but I want to see it, frame it, and record it as it is.
This project is about people, places, and things, and how they exist together right now. Along the way, I’ll be noticing what I call empathocide—the ways life, people, and the planet get hurt when greed, power, and indifference take over—but mostly, I just want to observe and capture what’s here, now.
My career has been about documenting the edges—jazz musicians in NYC, theater, people living in tents and on the streets, gender inequality in music. This project is the culmination of that work. It’s the biggest thing I’ve ever tried, and I want it to matter.
Why I Need Your Support.
I’m doing this the hard way. No hotels. No fluff. I’m sleeping in my vehicle at Love’s and Pilot stations, showering at truck stops, and living on the road to keep my lens focused on the people who actually make this country run.
Documentary work at this level is a grind. It’s expensive, it’s exhausting, and it takes time. Your support on GoFundMe doesn't just pay for gas and tolls; it funds the storage for thousands of raw video clips and portraits that will eventually become a definitive archive of this era for exhibition and finally creating a book.
Sharing this post and/or donating helps me capture the marrow of this country at one of its most profound turning points. Please join me on this journey .
@aportraitofamericain2026
America in 2026 is facing unprecedented challenges. From devastating climate disasters, rising inequality and displacement, housing insecurity, fractured families and communities, life for many feels fragile, uncertain, even scary. I want to capture this moment in time — through the people who are living it, struggling with it, persevering every day.
Your support makes it possible to document these fleeting moments and preserve them for history. People — diners, gas stations, small towns, city streets. Each entry becomes a snapshot of resilience, humanity, and diversity across America today.
Why Your Support Matters
