My 13-year-old cat, Andromeda, has been battling a severe and persistent UTI for the past 3 months and her condition has now worsened.

Her initial diagnosis treatments, medicine, and tests cost over $2,000. Her recent specialty cat vet visits have costed an additional $2,000 which I was forced with no other option but to put onto a credit card after having already drained my savings on her care. She will have a few more follow up appointments to assess the progress of eliminating the UTI and status of possible tumor/sever inflammation of her bladder. Additionally, she is now facing a hyperthyroid diagnosis in addition to the possibility of a cancerous bladder tumor (see updates for more details).

Andromeda's issues began as a typical UTI but have not resolved with standard treatments. A urine culture identified a rod-shaped bacteria that is known for being more difficult to treat. We have since discovered the presence of crystals in her urine, which is causing additional pain and complications. We have tried multiple medication courses, including an antibiotic injection, but the infection has returned each time. Giving her the prescribed liquid medication is also a significant challenge, as it causes her to vomit, making it impossible for her to get a full dose.

This has been a particularly challenging and expensive year for her health. The costs from the UTI are a culmination of several separate issues. Late last year, she was treated for an unidentified short-term illness, and earlier this year, an ear infection. These unexpected bills, combined with the ongoing costs of her yearly exams, blood work, urinalysis, shots, flea medication, and lifelong asthma medication prescriptions, have completely exhausted my savings.

I've made the difficult but necessary decision to seek treatment at a specialized cat hospital regarding her UTI, so that she can get the expert care she needs. The costs for treatments/medicine and upcoming follow up appointments are more than what I can afford on my own. Andromeda has been a beloved member of our family for almost a decade, since I adopted her from an Austin shelter when she was 5 years old.
