Andrew Sanders Memorial Art Scholarship
Donation protected
Back in June 2020 Andrew Sanders (AKA: Drew, Sanders, and Sandy) felt lost with all the challenges that Covid-19 presented. He had just earned his degree in Arts from San Francisco State University. His mind was buzzing with all the things that his future held. He wrote down his hopes and dreams and set his goals.
Andrew was exploding with energy of a bright future, but this all ended on July 17, 2020. That amazing energy that touched so many of us and that would have touched so many more came to an end.
We want to honor the amazing person that Andrew was by helping him achieve one of his goals. He had written that he wanted to help other artists in their practice. As an art student, he was always short on funds to buy materials for his projects. We would like to create a memorial scholarship in Andrew’s name that would give art students money for their projects. We reached out to San Francisco State University and this was their response,
“I just wanted to say, on behalf of my colleagues, how thankful we are that you are thinking of honoring Drew with a scholarship. While it is true that we do have a small handful of scholarships in the School of Art, we do not have anything like what you are envisioning: a scholarship for students that comes out of the generosity and memory of one of their peers, and that would provide direct support to student-artists for their practice—something that can make such an important difference to them at this stage. It is a truly special, unique, and impactful possibility, and we in the School of Art will treat it as such, to take as much care as we can to ensure that it serves students and Drew’s memory as an inspiration and model."
As many know, Andrew was most passionate about biking and art. Andrew loved to express himself beyond what words could say, he was a very gifted independent artist and his work could be seen throughout the Bay Area, as many different peers sported some of Andrew's clothing and accessory wear. Andrew lived at the SF State art studio and print lab while in school. He loved it there, and it only makes sense for us to start a scholarship in Andrew's name at his alma mater in the department that he cherished so deeply.
The funds we raise will be put into a perpetual scholarship at SFSU. The $25,000 will be invested by SFSU and a scholarship in Andrew’s name will be given to an art student each year moving forward. You can make a donation to this GoFundMe or directly to SFSU at https://give.sfsu.edu/21asms . If you feel so inclined to donate whatever you can or to just share this post with others, it will mean so much to his close friends and family. We want to continue to celebrate the life of Sanders and to be able to give back to students who possess the same characteristics and passion for art as Andrew did would be a wonderful way to do so.
So much love has been shown to our family from all who knew Andrew. So many wonderful memories shared about him and how he impacted each person’s life. It has been an incredible loss for all of us. We want to turn this sadness in our hearts into something positive that will fulfill one of Andrew’s goals. We hope that you join us in making this happen.
