I am a rising junior at Knox College studying Psychology with a double minor in Education and Gender Women's Studies. I am interested in performance art as a form of therapy and a vehicle of social change.
This upcoming fall trimester I have the opportunity to take a class in Afro-Cuban dance, music, and culture and then study abroad in Cuba with my class for eleven days over my winter break.
The trip costs $3,970 in total. I am able to pay for a portion of the trip with loans from Knox College and with my own income.
I was introduced to the power of art and cultural diversity at a very young age and it has had an incredible impact on me. I began dancing as a child at Muntu Dance Theatre. At the age of eight I joined the Chicago Children's Choir and over the course of ten years toured all over the United States and to South Africa. I also attended Chicago High School for the Arts (Chicago's first public arts high school) where I majored in classical voice.
Last summer I explored the world of arts administration and programming. I interned with two non-profit organizations in Chicago that provide arts education to children who might not otherwise have access to them. My experience last summer helped me expand my understanding of social enterprise, strengthen my leadership and cooperation skills, and gave me valuable experience in organizing community engagement projects. This summer and upcoming term I would like to expand on what I learned last year as well as grow as a dancer, musician, an artist, as a social activist and as an individual.
Any assistance I receive in making this dream come true would be a blessing!
