An Unexpected Expense Starring Sam Waller
Donation protected
Sam received the first letter around Spring/Summer of 2019. We thought it was a scam at first because it wasn’t even addressed to him properly (name was spelled completely off). It appeared to be a collections letter from an insurance agency for a few thousand dollars, formally requesting to be reimbursed. Fast forward to November 2020, Sam received a subpoena from the court advising he owed $3,400 plus court costs.
Back in June of 2018 (somewhere close to then), before Sam and I made the decision to move in together in December the same year, he was hit by a sports car that was speeding while riding his work bike home from work. This all happened within a block away from his house (he could literally see his house when it happened). I just remember him telling me how it was a moment he thought he could have been killed, so he got lucky! If you know Sam, as one of his friends or clients, you know this how he gets around town and more importantly how closely it is tied to his business, as his e-bike is essentially his business partner. Sam hasn’t owned a car for sixteen years (his preference). To make matters worse, the person who hit him was someone he (and I) knew. Because of this, and because Sam wasn't hurt enough to need a doctor visit, he decided not to get the police involved, and both parted ways. Now, the sucky part is that because he didn’t get the police involved and there was no video evidence, Sam couldn’t prove to the court the car was speeding when he turned onto memorial. Thus, the courts ruled in favor of the insurance agency.
This was all decided the first week of March. I guess it took me a while to figure out how to ask for help because how do you write something like this without feeling weird about it?! It's a lot of money, and an expense we were not expecting to have to pay. Anyway, I thought if anyone else felt this to be unfair and would like to help him out, it would be greatly appreciated but no pressure! Thank you <3
