My name is Melissa and I am Robbie's Mom!! Robbie is a left leg, above the knee, amputee. He lost his leg to cancer at the age of 13, but that is all. He was always determined not to let cancer take anything more!
NOW!!! He needs an everyday wheelchair for school and then College in the fall.
Robbie needs an everyday wheelchair and insurance won't pay for it because they pay for a prosthesis. UNFORTUNATELY, it will be $2,100 out of pocket. As his doctors have said, most "Above the Knee" Amputees need two forms of ambulatory devices to function in our society. He has his prosthesis, so he can work. He needs this everyday wheelchair to get around at high school and then a larger college campus. He has complications from wearing his liner on his stump and that causes such excruciating pain that he has missed at least 5 days of school this year, because he can not walk!!! If he has both the prosthesis and the wheelchair, this pain and complications can be avoided. Besides, who can carry a 25 lb. leg around campus all day and still be able to go to work? Anyway, the link will be coming back soon! Any financial help is appreciated...and since he has already broken ANOTHER state record (and his own 1st place finish time at Jr. Nationals from last year) in the 800m, we will be going back to Jr. Nationals again this year. $$$ on a teachers salary... ha ha ha ha!
To further explain: Robbie has complications with his prosthetic leg about once a month and it keeps him in pain for several days and he misses school, since he can not walk. He gets an infection on his stump that causes cysts and they cause extreme pain when under continual pressure from the socket his stump sits in. This has brought us to realize that he needs a wheelchair for everyday use at school, so he can only use his prosthetic at work. He needs to work to pay his bills, now that he is getting beyond high school and looking forward to his future.
