-AN EVOLUTION OF INSPIRATION- An Art, Fashion and Technology Experience by Scott Nylund

"An EVOLUTION of INSPIRATION" is a visual exploration on the journey of finding inspiration, experiencing inspiration and applying that inspiration to the process of DESIGNING A SUSTAINABLE COLLECTION of high fashion clothing through the eyes of designer Scott Nylund. As you walk through this presentation of art and illustration, you will see how various bits of inspiration learned in the Amazon jungle are applied to a SIX PIECE HIGH FASHION MINI-CAPSULE AND 4 LARGE-SCALE PIECES OF ART. This sustainable exhibit is an experience that shows the entire design process from inception to finished garment.
February of 2014, I found myself at a huge crossroad in life. After 10 years of working for Miss Tina and Beyonce, it was time to part ways. The separation was difficult considering they have been my family for most of those years. What am I going to do now? What kind of man do I want to be?... In a few months I will no longer have a steady paycheck and health insurance. For the first time in 10 years I would have to look for new employment. I had anxiety, felt overwhelmed and I was trying as hard as I could not to slip into depression. Beyoncé and Miss Tina were a major part of my creative identity,... Without them, who am I?
With the last bit of money I had, I decided to go on a soul-searching trip to Ecuador and Peru to find myself, and hopefully what makes me HAPPY... On this month long journey I saw the highlands of Ecuador and spent time in THE AMAZON RAINFOREST. I then traveled to Peru to see the ruins, the desert, the coast and whatever else I could fit in. Everything was new to me; I was inspired again... The textiles, the people, the custom, the culture and mostly the ENERGY I felt just from being there.

Next, with the help of my friend Martin my inspiration expanded. Living in a run-down community we met baby Norma (whom in fact shares the name of my late Grandmother Norma). It was a serendipitous series of events that only our Universe and God could coordinate. Norma has a Basal Cell Carcinomas tumor growing below her belly which requires a lot of attention. I want nothing more than to raise funds to help Norma get her operation done. Overall, spending time with Norma and her family (as well as getting them groceries, clothes and toys) was far the most rewarding and gratifying thing I have ever done in my life. I truly feel IF MORE PEOPLE EXPERIENCED THE JOY IN GIVING FORWARD, they would do it more often.

From this journey, I decided that the most important advice for myself was to FOLLOW MY SMILES. The direction I wanted to take in life was towards Happiness. In order to do so, I made a list of everything that made me happy. Fashion, Art, Philanthropy, family and exploring the various cultures of the world. From these things I decided to do a show that encompasses my fashion illustrations, the design development process and actual sewn garments. All of this would be inspired by what I have learned, experienced and saw in the heart of the Amazon Rain Forest by spending time with conservationists, naturalists and members of indigenous tribes.
Some of the proceeds will go towards raising awareness about the Amazon Rain Forest and the rest will go towards developing this exhibit. My personal proceeds from the final show will help go towards building Norma and her family a home that is closer to a school that her brothers can get to and from safety, while Mother Norma takes care of Baby Norma whom is ill from a Basal Cell Carcinomas tumor growing below her belly which requires a lot of attention. I want nothing more then to raise funds to help Norma her family and the many others of Indigenous. This show I proudly nick-named: PROJECT NORMA." - Scott Nylund
