Today is day number 63 of being at Ryder Trauma Center in Miami with my son Matthew. He had an accident on Sept 27 and I brought him to Bethesda West as that was closest to our house. He was immediately transferred via ambulance to Delray. From there he was taken by trauma hawk to Ryder Trauma Center in Miami. We have been here ever since. They told us - thank goodness he got there when he did. He sustained burns on 53% of his entire body. If you are bothered by details of what happened then don’t read any further. I’m going to list some things but not in complete detail. There are so many things that have happened to him since we have been here. I don’t even know where to start. The first thing I can think of is that when I came to see him the first day in the morning as soon as the Trauma ICU would let us in (because they have strict visiting hours) - and I was brought to his bed - I would not have recognized him at all except for his feet sticking out of the sheets. He was so swollen and burned. He was intubated immediately after he arrived via the trauma hawk. He had his first surgery - which was his first round of grafting on the seventh day. This was an allograft done on his arms, hands, neck, shoulders, chest and abdomen. Then he had a tracheotomy so that he did not feel like he was choking on the tubes any more. I thought at this point that things were getting better. I had no idea what was going to be coming up. I counted. He had 14 IV’s going into him. In addition we had to deal with germs. He ended up getting strep, pneumonia and fevers. He had no idea where he was for weeks. 21 days in he had surgery number 2. Autograft was done on his right shoulder from his right thigh. Surgery number 3 was an autograft on his left arm, hand and fingers from his left leg. Surgery number 4 was seven weeks in on Halloween. Grafted his right forearm and hand from his right thigh. Next they downsized his trach tube so that he was able to whisper some words. Up until then we could only communicate by lip reading. The biggest accomplishment was passing a drink test so that he was allowed to eat ice chips. 40 days in he had surgery number 5 where he had autograft of neck, chest, shoulders, and lower abdomen done from his thigh donor site. He gets physical and occupational therapy every day. Day 52 we finally moved out of the Trauma ICU! Now we are on the main trauma floor. Big accomplishment, but also a lot more obstacles to overcome. Now we are at today; surgery number 6 on day number 59. This was supposed to be the shortest surgery but I think it was the longest and most intense. The final (hopefully) autograft of various bits on stomach, back left side, entire left side, front left, upper left arm, an elbow, neck around trach, left side of neck, and various other small pieces in multiple places. I have been staying down in Miami most of this time and Charles has been holding down the house and business. We have had multiple people asking charles and myself if they could help or donate. I have not had any time to think about anything other than immediate issues up until now. The most important thing that I can ask for is positive thoughts, messages, vibes, energies and well wishes. As of now we have had one ambulance ride, one trauma hawk ride, 52 days in trauma ICU, 12 days at trauma floor, and 6 surgeries and then upcoming rehab. If you would like to share and or help out we would greatly appreciate it. Thank you very much.
