Aid For Alex
Donation protected
On August 31, Alex was walking home when he was struck by an uninsured hit and run driver and transported to the UW Hospital with a large number of severe injuries. Alex has already spent 4 weeks in the Trauma and Life Support Center (TLC), which will only be the first step of a very long recovery process.
Alex is recovering from injuries to his brain, neck, femur, pelvis, and several other broken bones throughout his body. He has been through many surgeries, and is still receiving breathing support from a respirator. Although we may not know exactly how the neck and brain injuries will resolve for several months or years, he has started to make amazing progress on both fronts. He quickly surpassed initial expectations in recovering from his brain injury, and we are hoping for a similar outcome with the neck injury throughout his upcoming rehabilitation.
Despite all his injuries and understandably low energy levels, Alex pretty quickly was able to be alert and responsive to questions through nodding/shaking his head, and by using his always expressive eyebrows. More recently he received a tracheostomy, moving the breathing tube out of his mouth and allowing him to start smiling and mouthing words. He’s also been working hard at regaining mobility in his left arm while we wait and hope for improvements in his other limbs. After he is ready to leave the TLC, we expect stays at multiple rehabilitation facilities over many months as he progresses through his recovery, some of which will be outside the Madison area.

Anyone who knows Alex is well aware that he doesn’t usually aim to be the center of attention, but right now he needs all the support we can give him. All funds raised will go towards supporting Alex in his recovery, including medical expenses, bills, and anything else we can do to help him over the coming months and years. If funds allow, we would also like to offset some auxiliary expenses incurred by immediate family members in our efforts to assist Alex as much as we are able. Words cannot express how grateful we are for anyone who is willing and able to donate any amount, and also for the countless people who have been checking in and wishing Alex well.
