[original post]: On June 24th, 2022 many people across America felt shattered after receiving the news that the landmark decision Roe v. Wade had been overturned; a decision that protected birthing people’s right to their own bodies. Among those shattered people was a young woman named Alex Fite who felt so devastated by this decision that she catapulted herself into the women’s rights movement with enthusiasm.

In July 2022, Alex attended several protests in support of abortion rights and bodily autonomy. To her surprise, one of those protests ended in her arrest. The goal of this protest was to create a safe space for people physically and/or emotionally affected by the Dobbs decision, to protest this attack on human rights, and to bring awareness to this attack. Part of the protest included writing messages to Congress in chalk and leaving handprints in green children’s washable paint on the steps and outside of a county courthouse.

None of the protestors had the intention of causing any harm or damages, which is why washable paint and chalk were chosen as the mediums for these messages. Nonetheless, the local police responded to a report of possible vandalism and detained 13 people, ultimately arresting 8 people who spent 36 hours in jail. Among those arrested was Alex. She was charged with felony vandalism and felony conspiracy to commit the crime of vandalism.

After over a year of legal negotiations, the Judge, Alex's pro bono attorney, and the prosecutor have agreed that Alex's charges will be dropped completely if she pays restitution in the amount of $4,989.00 for the unintentional damages to the courthouse. If she is able to pay this restitution, she will not be ordered to serve any more jail time, and the charges will not go on her record as long as she complies with the court's orders for one year. Alex is trying to raise these funds by Dec 1st in time for her next court date.

Alex is currently in school working towards her undergrad degree, and she expects to pursue a law degree post-graduation. After this experience she is more determined to obtain her degree to help others who need help - just as she does right now. Charges on Alex’s record would crush her dream of ever being a lawyer as this could disqualify her from being able to practice law. We’re asking that you please support a young activist who wanted to bring awareness to a very important and pressing issue to ensure she still has a future of becoming a tenacious and passionate lawyer. Please share & spread awareness! Thank you for reading.
