“It’s too much.” Nabaderha Conso, a teacher from Nyamikubi who lost her husband and 4 children.

Situation
There were devastating flash floods and landslides on May 4th in Kalehe, a territory in the South Kivu province in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The latest death toll is at 425, more than 3,000 homes have been destroyed and more than 5,000 people are still missing. The disaster has also caused extensive damage to roads, bridges, and hospitals, leaving many locals without basic necessities such as food, water, and shelter. Six schools have been destroyed, the water distribution networks swept away, and hospitals in the villages of Bushushu and Nyamikubi are still submerged under water.

This campaign is seeking to raise $80,000 USD to support the emergency response and provide health services, medication, housing, shelter, hygiene kits, transportation, dignified funerals for victims, their families and more.
Actions Kalehe was formed as an emergency response by organizations and leaders in North and South Kivu who have been impacted and are committed to supporting the affected communities.

Members of the response team went to the affected villages to assess the situation, visit hospitals and camps, and will be going back to assist and coordinate volunteers, humanitarian aid and identify victims.

Actions Kalehe is a collective consisting of the following organizations:
Bukavu Explorer, founded by Francis Shok Mweze, a platform that raises awareness about Bukavu, the capital of the South Kivu province.

Drink Congo Coffee, founded by Linda Mugaruka, Deborah Kabwang, and Fatuma Lokembo. It is an initiative that promotes and advocates for Congolese coffee in Congo and abroad.

Coffee Cooperatives, represented by Joachim Munganga, the President of Sopacdi, one of the largest cooperatives in the region, with more than 9,000 members, many of which reside in Kalehe. Kalehe is renowned for its coffee and coffee cooperatives and other agricultural associations are part of the response team.

Association of Journalists and Advocates, an organization that advocates for journalists, women and children’s rights in South Kivu.
The majority of Actions Kalehe’s founding members are based in Bukavu, and it is the city where aid and supplies will be centralized before being transported to Kalehe. The funds are urgently needed now as the team travels back and forth to Kalehe to support the victims.

We hope to see you share and participate in this humanitarian initiative to bring relief and aid to Kalehe’s resilient communities in the face of this tragedy.
