Dear Friends,
I am running for the position of Treasurer of the L.A. College Faculty Guild AFT 1521 and I need your help. Guild friends identified a need, and I stepped up to the plate. I'm running against an incumbent, and in order to win, Guild advisors are recommending two mailers, each costs $4200 to reach ~5000 faculty. I am humbled by the growing excitement over my candidacy.
I love my job! teaching at West & East LA Colleges of the LA Community Colleges for nearly a decade as an Africanist/World historian. Now I would like to serve, to ensure we have a strong union in the largest community college district in the country (with 9 campuses) to teach our wonderfully diverse population of students.
Why am I running?
1. Transparency makes cents! I want to ensure that every dollar will be working for you. I will be an exceptional and prudent steward of the union’s financial resources, to ensure efficiency and smartness. Our budget should better reflect core union values and be our roadmap for success. I pledge transparency and fiscal responsibility, to communicate with you and translate financial statements on an annual basis.
2. I get the job done - demonstrated success!
o Achieved a 2.5-4% raise for three years plus better working conditions for all faculty, as a member of the Collective Bargaining team
o Acclaimed as the EDD Ombudsperson serving part-time faculty
-winning every court appeal
-inventing EDD Step by Step hands-on computer workshops
-creating a website and salary calculator
-advising other local unions
o History of finance and budget committee experience on campus as well as with non-profits
o recently elected as the new California Federation of Teachers Education Technolocy Committee Vice-Chair (for community colleges)
o Volunteered tirelessly with team COPE (Committee on Political Education) to elect our Trustees
3. It’s time for CHANGE! It is time to invest in new leadership that is collaborative, democratic, and transparent. I will work to create a positive and fun culture and inclusive climate in our union.
