About the project:
ADS e ARTS is an experimental art performance project that originated from the idea of mutual collaboration and symbiosis of co-creation between the venue and the music, with the venue serving as the source of the inspiration. The idea was conceived in April 2023 by Yusuf Prabananta Fini, along with three composers: Alam Gabriel Hernández Ramírez, Virág Anna Virág, and Maarten Bauer. They met during our study at Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag.

On 22 September 2023, we visited Gallery Lukisan in Bergen Op Zoom and engaged in an intriguing discussion with the directors. From that visit, we are inspired by the ubiquitous theme of art versus commerce. Aiming to explore and reflect on our interactions and relationships with advertisements, delving into our feelings, preferences, and criticisms of them. Each of the three composers will create compositions showcasing their individual perspectives and characteristics, incorporating the artworks on display during the performance. Therefore, we came up with the title "ADS e ARTS: Audiation of Demand Shaping."

Audiation, a term coined by Edwin Gordon, describes a cognitive process of hearing and comprehending music in the mind, even when the sound is no longer or may never have been physically present. It is a mental process by which the brain gives meaning to musical sounds. We also predict, based on our familiarity with the tonal and rhythmic conventions of the music being heard, what will come next. Additionally, demand shaping is a strategic effort to influence and control consumer demand. It employs various marketing and operational tactics to shape, guide, or stimulate consumer preferences and behaviours. These two terms create meaning in something and how it stays in mind, influencing and predicting someone's behaviours. The two are intriguing to explore, and their relationship, in which sounds and music are also crucial elements in demand shaping.

About the pieces:
The three composers will each present one composition. These three pieces are separated yet interconnected. Ambience sounds will be played during the intermission between the pieces, creating a seamless transition. This intentional continuity aims to blur the lines between the pieces, offering the audience an experience where the three compositions function as one, deliberately causing a sense of intrigue and confusion. They will also be played in three different spots within the venue to create an omnidirectional source of sound, enveloping the entire space.

“Lithium” by Alam Gabriel Hernández Ramírez will address the nature of advertisements in the digital era, where all sorts of information are enormous, popping out wherever and whenever. As if, they invade our minds and become a potential risk to our own lives – an excessive, repetitive, random, and annoying publicity. In response to that, “Same” by Virág Anna Virág, will try to take the point of view as the entity being advertised. The successful digital era’s advertisements seem to neglect the depth of the values and potential of the entity itself. They are overshadowed by the “appropriate”, eye-catching, concise, and persuasive advertising. As if, the entity itself creates two different personas.

“Vrij” by Maarten Bauer will wrap up the performance with a theme of freedom and being in charge of our decision-making without any artificial rules and parameters algorithms. He depicts this idea through his own reflection on composing a music, that sometimes hindered by machine-like musical parameters.
