My name is Betty Lemite, I am a Registered Nurse; I have been working in the nursing field for 21 years. During the course of my career, I have performed in diverse roles as Staff Development Coordinator, Risk management Officer, Infection Control Nurse, Assistant Director Of Nursing; and at present I am the Director Of Nursing Of a Skilled Long Term Care facility. I have taken great pride in planning and organizing the overall operation of the services provided to my patients which consist of predominantly the geriatric population.
In knowing that the geriatric population is a vulnerable group, I’ve always advocate through my state Representative on any proposed changes that would directly impact that group; for my ongoing wish is to see that the elderlies receive the highest quality of care at all times. It is a population I take to heart.
In my recent trip to Haiti, my attention navigated toward our elderly population in the rural areas, whom I found to be neglected and in dire need of attention. The resources available are very few or close to none; and only those who had certain privileges to meet the qualifications can benefit from them; and that makes up a very small percentage of that population.
The other underprivileged group is leaving in poverty. Many are abandoned by their families who have left in search of a better life for themselves and never returned. They are malnourished since they can no longer provide for themselves. They don’t have access to health care; and for some, because of their age and ailments; they are ridiculed. They go through many physical and psychological distress, all awhile there is no one paying a close eye on them.
These frail elderlies were once strong working individuals striving to raise their own families. They were farmers, they were the merchant whom we would purchase our food from; they were the ones conducting our church services, they were once contributing to the growth of their communities.
As they have become incapacitated, I strongly feel that they should get something in return. They should have some TLC (tender loving care). They deserve to be nurtured, to be fed, to have their hygiene looked after; to have their overall basic and psychosocial needs met so they can have a better quality of life until they reach their last days. Most importantly to have their dignity preserved and respected. The question was; who will be willing to take on that challenging task.
I felt with my expertise, love e and compassion for that age group, I could attempt and eventually succeed at implementing a special program gearing toward addressing the needs of these individuals; thus the reason I reached out to other conscientious professionals to join me in my mission; and I founded ACVA.
