A Five-Organ Transplant and a Pile of Debt

In 2017, Nathan Pensinger had a five-organ transplant; his life is forever changed. His allowable work hours are restricted and he is not physically able to work in the industry he prepared for during his studies.  In addition to factoring in unexpected medical and medication expenses, he must now pay back the student loans that have ballooned during his medical ordeal.  At the exact time Nathan was trying to heal from his surgeries, Career Education Corporation (Ticker: CECO) was settling a$500 million lawsuit brought on by 48 state attorney generals for improper marketing and student-loan sales practices.  Unfortunately for Nathan, his loans weren't included in the settlement because they weren't owned by CECO.  Additionally, he is not eligible for government protection to apply for relief because his loans were private, not federal.
