The Amharic language carries centuries of wisdom, emotion, and poetic depth. It’s the language of our parents' proverbs, of epic histories, and of our deepest cultural identity.
But in a digital world, our language is being left behind. We lack the modern tools it deserves—to be played with, sung, written with, heard, and shared in new, vibrant forms.
It’s time we gave Amharic digital instruments as rich and expressive as the language itself.
Mission / Story
We are a small, dedicated team of Ethiopian-American and Indian developers, united by a shared mission and led by our founder, Abate Sebsibe.
"My name is Abate Sebsibe, and Gitimtim is the culmination of my life's work. My journey has taken me from a 17-year career in finance on Wall Street to lecturing in economics and public policy at both the City University of New York and Addis Ababa University.
This project was born directly from my PhD research, which focused on the link between early childhood development and economic growth in Ethiopia. A key finding was the profound lack of high-quality, indigenous tools for cognitive development—a gap that holds back potential.
Gitimtim bridges that gap by creating culturally rooted, interactive tools that spark curiosity, strengthen memory, and encourage creative expression — the very building blocks of cognitive development. From proverb-based games to text-to-speech and creative writing apps, Gitimtim gives children and adults alike the instruments to think, play, and create in their own language."
By uniting the technical expertise of our developer team in India with a deeply personal mission rooted in Ethiopia, we are planting the seeds for a digital rebirth of our language — one that empowers learning, creativity, and cultural pride.
What We Are Building
We are creating an ecosystem of foundational tools that welcome kids, storytellers, learners, educators, writers, and dreamers to explore, create, and grow in their language. With your support, this Seed Launch will bring our first five projects to life:
- Symphonic ልሳን Studio: A creative toolkit for poets and artists to blend advanced sound patterns, traditional rhythms, and meaning.
- Amharic Text-to-Speech: A clear, natural voice for Amharic text, making the spoken word accessible to all.
- Amharic Proverbs Games: Fun, interactive games that turn timeless wisdom into playful learning for a new generation.
- Gitimtim Kids: Nursery rhymes, text-to-speech / voice playback & recording (speech development), rhyme matching games, interactive stories and visual boards - all designed to engage children in their own language from an early age.
- Amharic Proverbs Dictionary (ongoing): A powerful foundation built to evolve for years to come.
Why Seed Funding? Our Strategic Approach
Your support at this seed stage is vital. It allows us to build the core prototypes and Minimum Viable Products (MVPs) for each concept. This lets us test our ideas, gather crucial community feedback, and build a strong foundation before a larger-scale rollout.
By leveraging today's advanced AI and rapid development tools, a small, dedicated team like ours can build and prototype more efficiently than ever before, turning this ambitious vision into a reality.
