To my beloved friends, colleagues, and our wonderful Naples community:
On this evening when we have so much to be thankful for, I write to you because there are those among us who are hurting a little more this year in the wake of hurricane Ian.
It is the people and animals in these hardest hit communities that we’d like to focus relief efforts on, to remind them that while it appears the world is moving on, we’ve not forgotten about those still struggling. To that end, Underdogs was born.
Underdogs is a small group with one mission: to bring basic medicine at no cost to folks who wouldn’t otherwise have access to veterinary care.
Our why is simple: Watching people make the impossible decision to surrender their pets because they find themselves homeless, seeing abandoned animals suffer without medical care… these are perils that challenge the oath we swore to uphold as veterinarians.
The human-canine bond is a particular passion of mine. I have witnessed beautiful testaments to love, partnership, friendship, and kindness, all held by the sacred contract humankind has entered into with dogs. It is my personal mission to honor, serve, and protect that bond where it matters most; because for some people today, all they have left is their dog.
Veterinary medicine is an incredible front line sentinel against threats to public health. With the massive amount of standing water/sewage, we are aware that infection, heartworm disease/parasitism, and zoonotic threats will emerge. We have an opportunity to act as a barrier to those threats and keep whole communities safer.
I believe that this is the most powerful way we can show up as veterinary professionals. It might be the most important work we will ever undertake.
Help us prepare a place for the tired, the weary, the broken. This is not a thing we will do; it is a call we will answer.
I have attached details for the first clinic and a GoFundMe link to help raise funds for ongoing costs. Our goal is to host one every month; this is a fluid goal, as many of us are working full time still. We have nothing fancy… one tent, lots of people with mad skills and big hearts with a desire to help.
Special shout out to our vendors for providing food, vaccines, and medication for pets in need. You got us off the ground with this generosity, and you have my eternal gratitude.
Thank you for listening, for volunteering, for donating. Thank you for helping support this community we love so well.
With Love,
Dr. T. Moin
