On November 17, 2021, two days after getting her husband Dan home from a 4 night stay in the hospital after his appendix burst, Laurie went to the ER with major pain in her left side. After an initial, incorrect diagnosis of pneumonia, things progressed over the next two days to blood clots in the lungs which were then determined to be caused by a couple of masses in her lungs, which had spread to her brain, liver and spine. Diagnosis: Stage 4 Lung Cancer. Since then, Laurie has been on an oral chemo drug that has been working well to contain the cancer, but she continues to be closely monitored. During this past month, it has become apparent that there will be medical needs that insurance will not cover and which will not be insignificant.

For those of you who know Laurie, she is an incredible leader and team member, but more importantly, she is an amazing human being. For many of us who are spread across the country and the world, and cannot always be physically present with the Wilburn family, here is one way in which you can help. As her work family and broader community, we are whole-heartedly behind Laurie and her family in all forms of support, sending positivity and prayers every step of the way, and showing up in every which way they need.
