Raising Money for Parkinson’s UK
Hi my names Yasmine I’m 21 years old and have yet to run more than 6miles. On the 10th of May I will be running the Moray Coastal Trail Race which is 23 miles…
I am raising money for the charity Parkinson’s UK in honour of my grandad who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2007, he sadly passed away in April 2020 in Belgium, having battled with Parkinson's Disease for over 10 years.
He loved to travel, in later years his greatest pleasure was walking for miles on a remote sandy beach in the very North of Scotland, a place that held precious memories of his childhood and happy times with his family. Over time it became increasingly difficult to navigate the stones to get down onto the beach and little by little everything else became a struggle too, even the little things, especially the little things.
Parkinson's is a progressive neurological condition. This means that it causes problems in the brain and gets worse over time. People with Parkinson's don't have enough of the chemical dopamine in their brain because some of the nerve cells that make it have stopped working. There are over 40 symptoms, some of the most common are tremors, rigidity, slowness of movement. As Parkinson’s progresses complications such as weight loss, chest infections and pneumonia, aspiration pneumonia and an increase risk of falling and fractures arise.
Parkinson’s UK offer support for those that have been diagnosed and dealing with this condition. They also fund research into finding new and better treatments and campaign for improvements in the healthcare system.
He was an incredible special person, and someone I still hold dear to me. Any support or donations you can give would be greatly appreciated
