I never thought my family would be affected by the nemesis of GUN VIOLENCE. On Friday November 8, 2019, I received a phone call no mother should receive.  My son, Jovez Hughes age 24, had been shot.  I rushed to the scene and was told my son was being rushed to the hospital with a single gunshot to the head.  After finding out more details, it became even harder to believe this was happening to my family.  Jovez’s childhood friend accidentally shot him.  His friend did not realize there was a bullet in the chamber and was playing with a gun in the front seat of his truck.  The gun accidentally went off and struck Jovez in the head.  After arriving at the hospital, the news was far worse.  Jovez is paralyzed on his right side and is unable to speak.  The bullet struck the part of the brain that controls speech.  Just like that, my son’s life changed because of the nemesis of GUN VIOLENCE.  It is a miracle that Jovez survived the shooting, and I am grateful for his life.  Jovez was in Shock Trauma ICU for over two months because of the severity of the injury. The expense of remodeling the home and the equipment needed to provide care for Jovez is causing a major hardship on our family.  He needs a special mattress, a shower chair, a Hoyer lift, and a specialized van for transportation.  We have reached out to various organizations for help.  However, Jovez is 24 and does not qualify for help many organizations.  Many organizations out there help teens but not young men.  Therefore, we are trying to raise as much money as possible to help financially for medical expenses, bills, and everyday expenses.  We appreciate any amount donated.  The funds will go a long way in helping Jovez in his recovery.  We are hoping for a full recovery and know that it will be a long road to recovery.
