To our loving family, friends and caring strangers,
This fundraiser is to help our daughter Scarlett Turnbull beat cancer. Scarlett just turned 9 months old and we noticed that something was off with her right eye. After going to her family doctor and then a trip to the IWK, we received the worst news any parent could receive. Scarlett was diagnosed with a Retinoblastoma cancerous tumour in her eye. It is a rare form of cancer that affects 1.3% of children. So roughly only 25 kids per year are diagnosed with it in Canada.
After an MRI scan and several ultrasounds, it was determined that we caught it before it moved anywhere else besides her right eye. This allowed us to go ahead with a specialized treatment called IAC (Intra-Arterial Chemotherapy). IAC is a method of delivering concentrated doses of cancer-killing medicine directly to the affected area of the eye. While Scarlett is sedated, a very thin catheter is inserted into an artery in the hip and fed through the body’s network of arteries to the opening of the ophthalmic artery, behind the eye, where the chemotherapy dose is given. Scarlett will have to repeat these treatments every 3-4 weeks to hopefully shrink the tumour enough where we can use laser or cryotherapy to kill the remaining parts of the tumour. The tumour is on the high end of the size scale so it may take as many as 4-5 sessions and then many follow up appointments for a year or two. I should note that IAC can only be done by experts at SickKids in Toronto so we will have to fly back and forth from Halifax.
So many family and friends have reached out to give their support and ask how they can help so we decided to create this fundraiser. This fundraiser will help with the expenses of the family flying to SickKids in Toronto for treatments.
