Hi, my name is Sarah Christian soon to be Sarah Barrett. My amazing fiancé has been a firefighter for 21 years and a paramedic for 26. He is the father to 3 amazing young men and soon to be superhero stepfather to 2 more incredible boys and 1 girl who has him wrapped around her finger. On November 14th, 2022, our family’s life was turned upside down when Ryan was diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia. Unfortunately, Ryan has not been able to work due to the side effects of his chemotherapy and having an enlarged spleen. Ryan has tried and requested to stay on light duty but bc of a workman’s comp policy, they will not allow. Despite that any and all cancer is supposed to be covered and supported for firefighters according to the Federal Employee Compensation Act, the city Ryan works for is not covering or supporting him. We currently are in litigation but will not see any compensation or immediate provision for up to 16 months. This leaves Ryan from being able to cover his rent, bills, and soon to be medical coverage. Since they won’t let him work anything but full duty, and he has used all of his time off as well as what others have donated, he is no longer receiving any pay and will soon loose his insurance. We are asking, that if you can, help him get through this time so he can continue his treatment, so he can stay in his home and can pay his necessity bills. Ryan has repeatedly laid his life on the line for this community without question, or blinking an eye.
