Hi! My name is April and I am fundraising for my mom and sister to help them through this tough time. Back in July they were woken up at 3am by the firefighters to evacuate their home because the connecting duplex was on fire. Unfortunately, their neighbor had set his couch on fire and it quickly spread. Luckily it did not cross over into their place, but the smoke and water damage ruined some of their items. At this point they were displaced from their home with no where to go. They have been living with me since July with no move back date determined. They are both sharing a bedroom with my 9 year old son which isn't ideal but we are making it work. The manager of her rental guaranteed them the place back once repairs were done but had no estimated finish date. In the meantime they allowed them to use the garage for storage. We put all of their belongings inside the garage immediately so they could begin doing what they needed to, but unfortunately til this day no renovations or construction has started. They keep giving them the run around, mind you my mom has been a loyal tenant since i was in 3rd grade and I am now 31 years old. Everything is so expensive around here and they were lucky enough to have such a good deal on their two bedroom unit.
Over the past few months the man who caused the fire was still roaming around and actually was sleeping in his truck and kept it parked in front of the garages (my moms and his old garage) which are side by side in an alley behind the unit. He is mentally ill and they deemed the fire an accident so there was not much they could do. Fast forward to 11pm last night and we got a call from the neighbor across the way. She told us that the man set fire to his truck and that the garages were burning. THE garages where my family's belongings were being stored. Thankfully there was no fire damage, however there was some water damage to my mom's mattress and everything wreaks of smoke. We have not even broken the news to my mom because I know how devastated she will be. We took the entire morning to move everything into a storage which is crazy expensive. We wanted to take care of the situation so when we tell my mom, hopefully she wont be as stressed. But to her it will be just another set back in potentially moving back in and the most scary thing is possibly moving back and having to fear that this man will strike again. They have gotten lucky twice and I fear that the third time they wont be so lucky. The sheriffs cannot do anything and cannot force him to go into a mental hospital, cannot force him to take his meds and unfortunately my family is being affected by his poor decisions. I understand that he has a mental illness and I am sorry for that, but not at the expense of my mom and sister's health and happiness.
I would love for them to get a new place far away from there and start fresh. My mom has had such a rough few years with a diagnosis of cancer and at one point on dialysis. She is currently on chemo and truly has shown us what a true warrior is. It seems like she cannot catch a break. I am asking for help for them cause I know they would never ask themselves. They do so much for us and are the best grammy and tia anyone could ask for. I want them happy and healthy for another 100 years.
Anything will help. Even if it is just enough to get my mom a new bed.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story and I hope you know that any amount donated is appreciated so much.
