For the past few summers, Grinnell College alum Dr. J. Otto Pohl has been traveling back to Kyrgyzstan, where he used to teach and conduct research, to prepare the necessary paperwork to relocate his family from Central Asia in order to be reunited with him. He currently teaches at the University of Ghana in Legon. Troubling recent events, including direct threats to his young family, have created a sense of urgency to take action. Otto is working as I write to complete and expedite the visas and other travel requirements, as well as cover travel expenses, for his wife, step-daughter, step-son, and young daughter, who is also a U.S. citizen. But this effort to speed up the process will prove to be quite expensive and difficult. Here is where you can help.
My name is Dr. Eric J. Schmaltz, Associate Professor of History at Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva. For the past 15 years, I have been a good colleague of Otto (pictured above). I am hoping that we can assist Otto and his family at this time by raising enough funds to safeguard their way out of a difficult predicament and for them to be together once again and safe.
