June 30th was the day our entire family's life changed. Brett, the man who was a doting husband to my mother and proudly took the role as our father almost 25 years ago, was overcome by his lifelong struggle with mental health. He worked tirelessly to provide the best possible life he could for us and our mother, no matter how sore his back was or how many pairs of shoes had to fall apart in the process.
Papa was a workaholic by most peoples standards, but maybe it was because he was so good at what he did. He could take whole businesses and turn them around. He could set record sales numbers while area managing for 20 stores at a time. He was a model for what a leader should be, but it took its toll. After a layoff, mom's battle with (and victory against) cancer, and the countless other big curveballs life throws, the finances took a downward spiral and the darkness around him crept further in. He began to have a harder time staying at jobs that left him run ragged only to still feel he fell short. He found it harder to take pride in his role as a cog in the machines that so often abuse and take advantage of our hard work. He changed jobs several times in the past few years, most recently 6 months ago. Due to this and the cause of his death, the life insurance policy he has is void.
Papa left us with a lot of questions and a lot of hurt, but we know we will find a way forward together. Not only are we grieving the soul we lost, but facing the fears of what our next year will look like as we try to navigate the expenses of starting a new life and tying up the ends of his. We are asking for any of the people who have felt the love and generosity of my sweet momma and papa to consider helping us give her some hope and much needed help in a hopeless feeling situation. If you're unable to contribute monetarily, please consider sharing our story or even just offering words of comfort as we can use all the love you're able to give. We deeply thank you and, as Papa would add, may the force be with you.
