Hi, my name is Becky Hein, and my sister is Rachel Benkovic.
Rachel is fighting through one of the hardest chapters of her life, and our family needs your help to make sure she has a full recovery.
A little over a month ago, she was suddenly struck with a mysterious illness that left her unable to move. For weeks, doctors searched for answers and ran countless tests. Eventually, she was diagnosed with West Nile Virus, a rare and devastating infection that attacked her nervous system.
Rachel has spent a month in the hospital and still can’t walk, sit up on her own, or perform basic tasks without assistance. She’s working very hard every day to relearn how to regain control of her body. Her spirit is strong, but her recovery will be long and demanding.
Before becoming ill, Rachel worked as an aide to special needs children in a local school – a role that fit her perfectly. She’s one of those rare people who always shows up for others with patience, warmth, and a heart full of compassion. Everyone who knows her loves her.
She’s also a devoted mom to two young men – one in high school and one who just started his freshman year at college – and wife to Dave, who’s been by her side through every step of this while still working full-time. With Rachel unable to work, the family is struggling to cover daily expenses while also preparing for hospital bills and the next phase of her recovery.
The hospital will be releasing Rachel soon, even though she’s not yet regained her mobility, so we’re setting up the care she needs in our home. That includes a hospital bed, wheelchair, and other equipment, plus regular visits from nurses and physical therapists.
We’re asking for help to ease the financial burden and give Rachel the best possible chance at recovery. Every donation will go directly to the Benkovics to go toward her medical care, home setup, and helping her family stay afloat during this difficult time.
