This morning, my brother was detained by ICE, and in a single moment, our family’s world was torn apart. My brother was raised in the Twin Cities. This is the only home he has ever known. He grew up here, went to school here, built lifelong friendships here, and worked hard every day to create a better future not just for himself, but for the people around him. He is smart, dependable, disciplined, and deeply kind. He has always lived with integrity and purpose, striving to do better and be better. By every meaningful definition, he is American; by upbringing, by values, by community. Yet because of a document, he is being sent to a country he does not know, a place considered his “motherland” only on paper. It is devastating that something so technical and impersonal can tear a family apart so completely. While he does have family there who love him and will welcome him, he is still being forced to start over in an unfamiliar place. He will need time to adjust, learn how life works there, find stable work, and rebuild his independence. This kind of transition especially under these circumstances is overwhelming and requires real support. This situation is not just heartbreaking, it is inhumane. My brother is a huge part of my life and the lives of so many others. His absence leaves a void that cannot be measured. Mi hermano creció en las Ciudades Gemelas. Este es el único hogar que ha conocido. Esta situación no solo es dolorosa, es inhumana. Mi hermano es una parte fundamental de mi vida y de la vida de muchas otras personas. Su ausencia deja un vacío imposible de describir.
