SOS! Save Our (Dance) Studio!

2021 It's with a very heavy heart that I share with you that Studio Alma Folklorica, home of the Ballet Folklorico Mexico Lindo, located in downtown Nampa, Idaho is in grave danger of being closed forever! Studio Alma Folklorica is is the only dance studio in Idaho dedicated solely to the teaching, learning and sharing the art of traditional Mexican folk dancing. Dances from the various states of Mexico are taught and performed just about everywhere! Have music, will dance! That's what we say! It's our pure passion and joy that keeps us dancing and sharing. My students have called downtown Nampa their dance home for the last seventeen years. They work hard and are a vital part of our community. They deserve to have a safe space where they can continue to learn about the beauty of Mexican culture and celebrate their heritage to share with future generations.
Due to the current pandemic, like so many arts organizations and small businesses experienced worldwide, all of our events this spring were cancelled, and thousands of dollars in revenue were lost. Unfortunately, our dance studio was no exception to the devastation. The cancellation of public and private performances, loss of students and inability to recoup the lost income resulted in the studio rent being paid at less than half, and the studio barely scraped by during quarantine. My studio landlord has given me 3 days notice to either come up with the missing funds or vacate the property this weekend, October 17, 2020. My heart is broken for so many reasons. The total needed to keep the studio open totals $3,000.00 dollars.
My dance company, the Ballet Folklorico Mexico Lindo was established in 2003. I started teaching traditional Mexican folk dancing with 4 students and soon grew the group to over forty-five dancers, ranging in age from 5 years old to adults. We have performed in Idaho, Oregon, Washington, California and Utah. We have won awards from the Idaho Commission on the Arts, Nampa BPOE Elks Lodge, Idaho ORFF-Shulwerk Association, Zion's Bank, 2C Spotlight Awards for Arts & Entertainment, City of Nampa Mayor's State of the City, Parade America, Idaho National Guard, KTVB Channel 7, and Gowen Field to name a few. We've been featured in television commercials, on news features, had articles written on our performances and educational outreach, and received accolades for our generosity and community collaborations and partner work.
I tell my dancers that we are “so much more” than just Cinco de Mayo! With over 30 individual Mexican states whose individual history is just as beautiful as the next, I strive to promote a sense of pride for the art, culture, history, family and self as it relates to Mexican dance. My goal is to preserve the culture and traditional dances for future generations to learn, enjoy, perform, and share. I’ve learned that it’s in sharing that I’ve gained the most knowledge, and I hope to always be learning and giving back what was once so generously given to me.
I pray that I'm able to raise the funds needed to keep my dance studio open. Not for me, but for my dancers-past present and future. They are beyond worthy and deserve to have their studio remain open. If we are granted the funding needed, we will be not only crazy happy to learn of the good news, but will put on a proper gran FIESTA and will personally invite our donors to share the celebration with us, be it in person (with social distancing, of course) or virtually too! Invitations will go out to all who contribute with a date and time to either log on or join us in person. We want to share our time and talents with you and say GRACIAS!
