Hope for Leilani

Leilani has been an energetic and spirited soul from the time she was born. She loves upcycling, animals, the Hamilton soundtrack, and babysitting her younger brother Migue and her baby cousins.

A couple of years ago we noticed that Leilani's interest in the things that had once brought her joy had declined significantly. She was finding it very hard to communicate her feelings and was isolating herself from her friends and family. This struggle led to self harming as a way to cope with her pain as well as suicidal thoughts.

We have exhausted all of the local resources available to her such as outpatient counseling, school based mental health services, family care coordinator, psychiatric care, and intensive in home therapy. After a couple of acute hospitalizations it was recommended that Leilani receive a higher level of intensive care. In February of this year we were fortunate enough to enroll her in a research study through the University of New Hampshire and she was able to attend a Therapeutic Wilderness program in Wisconsin. While she worked incredibly hard there, the recommendation is now that we admit her in to a highly therapeutic long term residential treatment program to continue with her treatment.

How you can help

The cost of a highly therapeutic program is incredibly expensive and more than what we can afford. We have applied for a scholarship and found a program in Arizona that would meet her needs and is willing to offer a discount but we will still need to come up with about 80,000 to cover the remaining cost of the program. This will allow Leilani to access a highly therapeutic environment to continue her healing process. This includes individual therapy up to three times a week, daily therapeutic group sessions, and weekly family therapy. She will also have educational staff that is trained to assist struggling students, small classes, and one on one tutoring.

We have kept this struggle private for the last two years for her privacy and dignity. It has become apparent that we need to reach out to our community at large for support. It is with her blessing that we share this with you. Our family would be immensely grateful for any amount of donation. As it will help us give Leilani this life changing support.

Ella es nuestra hermosa y valiente hija Leilani Qiahuitlet

 

Leilani ha sido una persona de espíritu libre y espontáneo desde que nació. Le encanta hacer arte con artículos reciclados, los animales, el musical Hamilton y cuidar a su hermano menor Migue y a sus primitos.

Hace un par de años notamos que el interés de Leilani en las cosas que una vez le habían traído alegría había disminuido significativamente. Le resultaba muy difícil comunicar sus sentimientos y se estaba aislando de sus amigos y familiares. Esta lucha la llevó a autolesionarse como una forma de lidiar con su dolor y a pensamientos suicidas.

Hemos agotado todos los recursos locales disponibles para ella, como terapeuta local, servicios de salud mental basados ​​en la escuela, coordinador de atención familiar, atención psiquiátrica y terapia intensiva en el hogar. Después de un par de hospitalizaciones, se recomendó que Leilani recibiera un nivel más alto de cuidados intensivos. En febrero de este año tuvimos la suerte de inscribirla en un estudio de investigación a través de la Universidad de New Hampshire y pudo asistir a un programa de Therapeutic Wilderness (terapia intensiva en la naturaleza) en Wisconsin por 4 meses. Trabajó increíblemente duro mientras estuvo en ese programa, la recomendación ahora es que la admitamos a un programa de tratamiento residencial a largo plazo altamente terapéutico para continuar con su tratamiento.

El costo de un programa altamente terapéutico es increíblemente caro y más de lo que podemos costear. Hemos solicitado una beca y encontrado un programa en Arizona que está dispuesto a ofrecernos un descuento, pero aún tendremos que conseguir alrededor de 80.000 para cubrir el costo restante del programa. Esto permitirá a Leilani acceder a un entorno altamente terapéutico para continuar su proceso de mejoramiento. Esto incluye terapia individual hasta tres veces por semana, sesiones grupales terapéuticas diarias y terapia familiar semanal. También tendrá personal educativo capacitado para ayudar a los estudiantes con dificultades, clases pequeñas y tutoría individualizada.

 

Hemos mantenido esta lucha en privado durante los últimos dos años por la privacidad y dignidad de nuestra hija. Se ha hecho evidente que debemos acercarnos a nuestra comunidad en general para obtener apoyo. Es con el consentimiento de Leilani que compartimos esto con ustedes.
