Anayeli’s very existence and well-being have been compromised, by those who should have sought to protect her, before she was even born. Born to teenage parents unable to meet their own needs, Anayeli was surrounded by a multigenerational cycle of drugs, crime, gang activity, violence, abuse and neglect. Due to this case being in the midst of the legal processes, the horrific abuse and neglect that she went through must remain unspoken. There is hope for Anayeli though and you can help her too.
Anayeli has a paternal grandma who adores her. She has been trying to protect her before she was born or knew for certain that Anayeli was her grandchild. She was even present at her birth, cutting the cord and being the first to welcome her to the world. It was the over twenty five years of experience working with children with special needs that made it impossible for her to sit idly by when Anayeli’s pediatrician raised concerns about her care when she was a week old and when she saw that the conditions Anayeli was to grow up in were getting worse not better despite her doing all she could to the contrary.
I know about this situation because her grandma is my friend and I have watched her try to support and educate Anayeli’s parents then having to soon after involve governmental agencies trying to seek protection for this helpless baby. When all efforts failed and she only saw things getting worse for Anayeli she took on the bold step of filing dependency asking the court to intercede for Anayeli. In four days, a judge did what no other professional had, she listened and removed Anayeli and placed her with my friend.
This was nine months ago. Anayeli is now 17 months and my friend works with her daily providing developmental therapies to help her grow and support her through the effects of the trauma she’s endured. Her grandma is faced with a monumental challenge in protecting her because she filed, is a party to the case and not on public assistance she must pay to have legal assistance. Her legal fees are currently over $13,500. She has taken out a loan, is giving up her home to have more money, her youngest who has just graduated High School, has put college on hold for a year to help and they have sold what they can but it is not enough. Her attorney has told her that if she fails to pay the balance of $3,637.50 by June 30th that he will remove himself from the case leaving her on her own for the next court date in late July.
Anayeli and my friend need your help, there will be at least another year worth of court proceedings and while my friend continues to search for agencies and attorneys willing to be a voice for Anayeli, she is turned down because she does work making more than $20,000 per year. I am trying to help her keep the attorney she has invested so much in already and help offset some of anticipated upcoming legal costs. This situation is devastating and Anayeli’s parents have so many more rights than Anayeli does despite their actions which have led to her father opting for a three year prison term and her mother remaining surrounded by the same influences that led to Anayeli’s removal. It is heartbreaking to think of the trauma this precious baby endured in her first eight months of life but even more so to think of what her life will be like if she is returned to the same environment.
Please help me, help my dear friend continue to fight for Anayeli’s rights and not allow her to go back to the horrific life she has endured and can hopefully one day will forget.
