WHAT HAPPENED

Where do you start when something happens and there isn’t a rule book to follow to know how to best deal with this new incident which has made a life changing movement. Oct 7th at 1030 am I was awoken by a fire alarm in my mom’s house in Latta SC, 2023. Thinking I put out the fire and waiting for the firemen out in the road because the the gsp sometimes sends you down a wrong street. The house continued burning. I was incorrect about distinguishing the fire. Totally wrong. It had started in the floor, not the ceiling. it started inside the walls, not the attic, it was the kitchen, not the living room. How could I be so wrong? But I was. I re-called the fire station due to the fact it was taking so long for them to come. Why? It was only down the street from me, where could they be? Maybe I gave the wrong address? Maybe they misunderstood me. What a nightmare unfolding! Words like flatwood, you should have…., why didn’t… were used that day. It took forever for the firemen to get to work. They were afraid because of the type of wood the house was made of. Our dog and three cats were trapped inside. It got so hot that firemen almost died (volunteers).

WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP

The aftermath was devastating since this house was perfect. It was gutted and slowly rebuilt wonderfully for my mother who had planned and spent years to get it ready to live there for her retirement years. Correct at 84 years of age her dreams literally went up in smoke however at that time she didn’t know. Unfortunately, 2023 is not a good time to build due to the economy. Just the slab for the foundation is $26,000. There are 4 pages of permits that need to be submitted and approved in order to build. Let’s not even talk about the price of wood at the moment. Astronomical !!!So the second idea was to purchase a prefab home. Too expensive as well. So finally, we pondered a mobile home or a condemn house might be affordable but believe it or not double wide are going for $185,000 and up, and to move a condemn home cost an arm and a leg, which we don’t have. As you can see this is getting highly complicated and sad due to the fact that a house similar to what was there is absolutely out of the question. Gratefully, my mother doesn’t need much to make her happy. A few windows and sound walls.

WHO IS PAMELA J MARISTANY

Pamela has helped many people in her time. Opening her home to families who needed a place to stay while they were in desperate need. Pamela also fostered a child, so that that child’s parents could get the help they needed in order to be a sound family again. She volunteered at the Special Olympics. Pamela believed that a community needed to be united and offered to vaccinate dogs for free. She raised her children to volunteer when they were young teenagers and to look up to their elders. She volunteered as a 4 H leader and had fund raisers for the boy scouts. Always busy. So generous.

Therefore, the cost of building has escalated beyond her means and time is at the essence. Please help me help her build a small home where she can be happy.
