We have been overwhelmed with the outpouring of love from so many of you since our dad passed away on February 22. Dad taught in the Mattoon School District for 34 years as a science teacher and several more years at Lake Land College. He was a passionate teacher who loved his job and his students. He had an especially soft spot for students in need. We clearly remember times when he gave students money for lunch or prom tickets when they couldn't afford them, coats and shoes when he saw they were worn out, and countless other acts of kindness.
We have decided to honor him and his life's passion by starting the David R. Sampson Memorial Scholarship Fund. This will be awarded to a 2016 Mattoon High School graduate attending Lake Land College or EIU (his alma mater), pursuing a degree in education or the sciences. Scholarships were what allowed him to attend college in a time he couldn't have otherwise afforded it. He would be honored to provide a student with the same opportunity.
We are requesting this in lieu of flowers.
