Wheels for Scarlett

Donation protected
Scarlett is the adorable, spunky daughter of my University of Wisconsin, Kappa Alpha Theta sorority sister, and friend, Rachel Frosaker Sepe. Like most second grade girls, Scarlett loves unicorns, arts and crafts, playing outside, and sloths. She is a nature loving, adventure seeking little girl who happens to ride around in a wheelchair.

Seven years ago, Scarlett was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type II, a rare neuromuscular condition that slowly atrophies her muscles.  Scarlett has never crawled or walked and uses her wheelchair to enjoy her life to the fullest, never passing up an opportunity to take her chair off-roading!

This winter, Scarlett will be having spine surgery to insert rods into her back to hold her spine into place and allow her to continue to grow.  At that time, her current wheelchair will no longer be the right solution for Scarlett's mobility.

Recently, the Sepes had an exciting day for Scarlett! She was able to test drive the power wheelchair they are hoping to get for her since she has outgrown her little pink chair. This chair is amazing. She can lift her legs up to stretch her contracted knees and also recline when she is tired or needs to take pressure off her hips. She is most excited for the lights! No more driving in the dark at night! It has so many setting and features and will be perfect for her back after surgery.

Many of the features will not be covered by insurance. They are considered by insurance companies to be convenience items, not necessities even though they are necessities for her body.

The Sepes also need to purchase a new manual chair that Scarlett needs so she is able to go places that are not accessible to her power chair, and also to keep up her arm strength.  Not one penny of that will be covered by insurance. (You can submit only one chair every 5 years and the power is more expensive so that goes through insurance for sure.) They will begin that process after her surgery this winter when they have a better idea how she will sit in a manual chair.

In addition to the new wheelchairs, the Sepes have had to add a new accessible van to their transportation arsenal, as Scarlett now needs a van she can drive her chair right into.  The out of pocket costs to the Sepes are staggering.

As friends of Scarlett, our goal is to provide two perfect chairs for her body to provide the mobility she needs to continue on her adventures and we need your help!  Thank YOU for your help to keep Scarlett moving!

* All funds collected will be deposited into Scarlett’s Special Needs Trust to be used for uninsured costs related to her care.  Our primary goal is to fund her new wheelchairs, and excess funds will be used for ongoing care needs.  Anyone wishing to write a check directly to the Trust can contact the campaign organizer for more details.
