It is our duty to fight for our freedom.
It is our duty to win.
We must love each other and support each other.
We have nothing to lose but our chains.
These sentiments spoken by Assata Shakur, a fearless black panther leader, echoes to all of us where we have come and where we must go. The chains of America have beaten, mutilated, discarded, and tortured the black souls of this country. From 1812 to 2020 we have fought for our place in a society that has fought to strip away our freedoms. Juneteenth is our holiday. It is where we come home, this is where we rejoice and cry out our pain and heal one another to continue the fight. June 19, 1865, was the beginning of our freedom day. It is the day we reclaimed our story, our joy, and our families.
Celebrating Juneteenth is creating a platform for us and only by us. This is where we can authentically display ourselves through, dance, song, and poetry. This is also a day to memorialize the lives that have been tragically ripped away from us by police brutality.
The mission of this Juneteenth event is to celebrate, grief, and simply bring awareness to these relevant issues affecting Black Lives. This will be accomplished through holding space to better educate ourselves, come together and listen to those that have been silenced for too long.
Through your help, we would love to cover finances that arise during the planning of this event alongside supporting black-owned businesses within the Southern Maine area.
