Stage IV Rectal Adenocarcinoma….sounds like we are watching an episode of ER (because let’s be real, McDreamy will never come anywhere near Dr. Carter’s TV medical knowledge!!!) These are words we never thought would be put in the same sentence with our dear beloved Esty. But God had a different plan for her and, at the same time, for us as her BFFs and confidants. Over 5 months ago the ground was shaken underneath our feet when we were faced with a diagnosis that none of us knew much about. Too much research can drive you crazy and shake you to your core, but we trusted in God’s promise as found in Psalm 73:26: “My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever.”
Corinna and I both met Esty at different times in our lives, but she impacted us beyond anyone’s imagination. If anyone knows Alina, they know all the “Esty and Alina stories” from the mid 90’s to today (OK, maybe not all, but definitely a few good ones!). The West Coast, on the other hand, know “Esty and Corinna”. And that’s fine….there’s enough Esty to go around. And if any of you want to be BFFs with Esty, you have our permission and trust us, you will not regret it!
I can’t tell you how old Esty is because…well, that’s just not nice to divulge a woman’s age. But I can tell you she’s 2 years older than me…but again, I can’t tell you how old I am, except that I am 37 years older than my cat Athos who is 2 years old. Esty married Danny in May of 2007 and God blessed them with 4 wonderful and beautiful children: Victoria, Alexandra, Matthew and Julianna. She is the most wonderful mother and her kids are so blessed to call her “Mama”. I remember Esty’s #1 fear when she was diagnosed was not being around to watch her children grow. That desire to watch them grow and to allow them to have a happy and care-free life was the drive behind her positive attitude and her decision to not let cancer dictate every second of her family’s life.
Corinna and I have been insisting for a long time to start a GoFundMe page, but Esty was adamant that as long as they had the financial abilities, they did not want to burden anyone with their problem. Obviously, we didn’t agree with that, but we respected Esty and Danny’s wishes. Unfortunately, these last 5 months have really drained their savings and with Esty being off work since April indefinitely, they are starting to feel the financial burden pressing down real hard. Hospital bills are piling up, tests not covered by insurance are many, surgery is a real (and welcomed) possibility in the very near future, mortgage and bills still must be paid, kids need school supplies and their own medical/dental expenses, and so many other that we all are very familiar with.
You have been with us every step of the way in prayer and that, ABOVE ALL, is the most important support Esty, Danny and their family needs. If, however you feel inclined to add a dollar…or two…or ten, it will be above and beyond their expectations.
We are humbled by the support we have seen so far. We believe 100% each one of the prayers were heard by our Heavenly Father and He answered, we know He did. He will fulfill HIS plan in Esty’s life, and she will be a walking testimony for him for many, many, many years to come…because God knows Alina and Corinna need Esty, their bestie, around for a long time. And then we will all sing the wonderful words that Esty loves so dearly: “He touched me, oh He touched me/And oh the joy that floods my soul/Something happened and now I know/He touched me and make me whole”.
