I've been a lone gay man in an athletic world for as long as I can remember. Always being out and proud amongst my teams and having my teams support was always special. Now that I have joined an inclusive rugby team and for once am not the only gay player, I'm discovering a new aspect of brotherhood.
What I learned from my years in sports is that through trials and tribulations, big tournaments and extreme games, you build a bond, a brotherhood with your teammates. I've experienced that but always felt something was lacking, being the only gay player.
The Bingham Cup is not only a chance to compete side by side with my gay teammates, but also against other gay teams. It would mean the world to me to go and experience such an event, meet other people from around the world who may have lived the same experience and come back with the memories forged in battle with my team mates.
